The Michigan Wolverines are likely looking to take a transfer portal quarterback in 2024, regardless of JJ McCarthy’s decision to stay at U-M or leave for the NFL. For Michigan football, the best outcome here is that McCarthy stays AND former five-star quarterback Dante Moore, a rising sophomore, commits and develops for another year before taking over in 2025. Recently, ESPN named Michigan the “best fit” for Moore, who is reportedly looking to commit in January and enroll early at his new school in the spring of 2024.

Can Michigan football land this major transfer portal quarterback?

Dante Moore was a major Michigan football recruiting target, seeing as he was a five-star quarterback and the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan. That said, despite having home-field advantage in his recruitment, Moore ultimately opted to go out west and play for UCLA, where he struggled as a true freshman starter. Now, with a season of experience under his belt, Moore is looking to potentially make a return, though there are other contenders involved.

Wolverines and others are still in the mix for Dante Moore

Per the latest reports on Dante Moore and his transfer portal prospects, there are four major players in his recruitment right now: Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, and Miami. Of course, the Buckeyes just lost Kyle McCord, and Oregon just took Dillon Gabriel, though the Wolverines still remain a major contender here.

ESPN thinks Michigan football is “best fit” for Dante Moore

Michigan football has been recruiting Dante Moore since 2018 — when he was in eighth grade — and Jim Harbaugh still appears to have his eyes set on landing the former five-star recruit. ESPN seems to like Michigan’s chances here as well, seeing as they named the Wolverines the “best fit” for Moore in a new article ($). On top of that, they compare Moore’s arm ability to that of Jayden Daniels (LSU), who just won the 2023 Heisman Trophy.

Despite preparation for their College Football Playoff matchup against Alabama in the Rose Bowl on January 1, the Maize and Blue are making a strong push for Dante Moore to get on a visit to Ann Arbor sometime soon. It sounds like Moore’s family is scheduling visits with a few schools right now, meaning there is a chance that a date is settled on sometime in the near future, though that remains to be seen. Landing this major transfer portal QB is not an end-all-be-all for the Wolverines, but it would surely help for the 2024 roster as Michigan looks to remain in Big Ten and national title contention for years to come.
