Perhaps no player from Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 transfer portal class was more coveted than Ernest Hausmann, a rising sophomore linebacker who started and stood out as a true freshman during his lone season with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Hausmann has not been on campus for as long as most of his teammates, though earlier today, the newest Michigan football linebacker addition explained that he is loving his new home.
Ernest Hausmann transitioning into the Michigan football program quite well so far
Ernest Hausmann caught the eye of many Michigan football fans last fall during Week 11 of the 2022 season when Nebraska came to Ann Arbor. While the Cornhuskers left with a brutal 31-point loss that weekend, Hausmann stood out with stats like 10 tackles, a sack, and more. Now, all of that talent will be used in Jesse Mitner’s defense, with Hausmann competing against the likes of Mike Barrett, Junior Colson, and more for a starting spot — a battle that could easily bleed into the first few games of the regular season slate.
Earlier today, for the first time this fall, Ernest Hausmann addressed the media — there, the rising sophomore standout explained how his transition from Nebraska to Michigan football is coming long thus far.
“The culture here (at Michigan football) is something very special,” Ernest Hausmann explained. “When I came in here in January, it was something that right away I noticed. … It’s been so special. Just the camaraderie that this team holds, it’s one of the things that makes me feel special. Now coming to fall camp, I’m gonna be with the guys and practicing after spring session with them, you can really see how and why we’re so successful with the team environment we have here.”
Transfer portal move will be beneficial for the sophomore linebacker
Hausmann was also asked to address the transition from Nebraska to Michigan; while he would not directly compare the two, it’s clear that he is happy with the move.
“I’m not gonna talk about the differences really in the standpoint of comparing those two (Michigan football and the Nebraska Cornhuskers),” Hausmann said. “Each school obviously has a different way of going about things. But here at Michigan, there are things that we stand on, and there’s a way that we conduct our business here at Michigan. And there was a way that we conducted our business at Nebraska. I’m not saying which one’s right or wrong. But obviously, I chose here at Michigan because I believe that this was the best fit for me moving forward.”
Last year, Ernest Hausmann lost to Michigan football, 34-3. This year, he will be in the Maize and Blue when the Wolverines hit the road and head to Lincoln, NE, during Week 5 of the coming season. With the linebacker battle getting intense down the stretch, iron is sharpening iron; regardless of who wins the battle this fall, expect Hausmann, Barrett, Colson, and many others (such as junior Jaydon Hood) to get plenty of reps on Jesse Minter’s “no star” defense.
