On Wednesday, Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day had the opportunity to speak at Big Ten Media Day in Indianapolis, IN. There, Day expressed his desire to initiate a conversation about moving ‘The Game’ from the final weekend of the regular season. Yesterday, Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and running back Blake Corum had the chance to respond, and Corum’s response was nothing short of perfect.
What did Ohio State football coach Ryan Day say about ‘The Game’ against Michigan football?
For context, here are Ryan Day’s comments about ‘The Game,’ which have been widely criticized by traditional college football and Michigan football fans, who insist on the iconic Michigan-Ohio State game being played in Week 13 of the season.
“I know one of the goals was to try to get as many teams as possible in the playoffs,” Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day said at Big Ten Media Day on Wednesday. “When you’re looking at that, you want to have certain teams you play on a yearly basis,” Day said. “At the same time, you also want to do the best you can to get as many guys into the playoffs.
“People see it from different points of view,” Day said. “I’m glad we still have the rivalry game. I do think we should consider when we play it, just because you may end up playing it back-to-back weeks … which would be awkward.
“I know we need to consider the tradition, but I think it’s worth a conversation on when. I think that’s significant just on how the season plays out. Other than that, I think they did the best they could with it. The good news is they didn’t build a schedule that is locked in or a long period of time. I think they can do this for a couple of years, reevaluate, and then have the flexibility to change it up if needed.”
What did Blake Corum say in response?
Yesterday, Michigan football took the stage at the podium for Big Ten Media Day at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. There, Blake Corum had the opportunity to respond to Ryan Day’s comments from the previous day.
“The Game is The Game, man,” Blake Corum said of the Michigan football vs. Ohio State football matchup, which is known as the best rivalry in all of sports. “… If you’re going to go into ‘The Game’ and be like, ‘Oh we’re going to play them next week so it doesn’t matter if we lose this week,’ come on. What mindset is that? That’s a loser’s mindset.
“If I know that I am going to play them next week, I am still going to play as hard as I am this week … It’s not going to take away from The Game, I don’t think. I know my guys — that’s not going to take anything away from my guys. We’re going to go into the game, each and every game, work our butts off, and we plan on winning.
“I get what (Ryan Day) is saying, but I don’t think (that it should be moved),” Blake Corum concluded.
