Yesterday, Jim Harbaugh and three of his top Wolverines made an appearance at Big Ten Media Day in Indianapolis, IN. The nation is buzzing about the Maize and Blue’s chances of winning it all this year after coming close to the national title game in the past two seasons. However, there are still a few key positions being worked out, one of which is cornerback. New Michigan football transfer addition, Josh Wallace, is expected to compete for the starting position, and is generating a ton of buzz in the locker room right now.

New Michigan football transfer cornerback Josh Wallace poised to make a splash

Currently, Michigan’s top cornerback spot is secured by second-year sensation Will Johnson, who was a freshman All-American last fall. As they head into the 2023 season, the team needs to find replacements for the corners they lost, namely Gemon Green and DJ Turner, who both performed exceptionally in 2022.

One name that has been mentioned for the CB2 role is the new Michigan football transfer, Josh Wallace, who stood out as a team captain and earned All-Independent honors during his time with UMass. As the Wolverines’ fall camp approaches (set to begin on August 1-2), this transfer is generating a lot of excitement within the locker room and is a player to keep an eye on as the season approaches.

“One of the starting corner positions (is up for grabs) — Amorion Walker, Josh Wallace, Ja’Den McBurrows, some other very fine players, newcomers,” Harbaugh said during Big Ten Media Day on Thursday. “But I think it will come down to a situation, where will Mikey (Sainristil) be a starter? Will Johnson be a starter? And then we’ve got, who is that other starter — whether it’s at nickel or corner? And it may training camp. It may take into the first couple of games.”

Hype is building for the Wolverines newest defensive back addition

Josh Wallace’s time in Ann Arbor may have been short, but he is already being recognized as one of the top defensive backs on the Wolverines’ roster.

Moreover, he seems to be adapting smoothly to his new team, as stated by a prominent Michigan football defensive back — Mike Sainristil — who had the opportunity to speak about him during Big Ten Media Day yesterday. The positive feedback from his fellow teammates further adds to the anticipation surrounding his potential impact on the team’s defense.

“Josh is an interesting guy,” Sainristil said on Thursday, per The Wolverine. “I actually just got off FaceTime with him. Josh, he’s a character. Since he’s been here, he’s been doing a really good job for himself. Don’t be surprised if you hear his name called a lot on Saturdays. He works hard, he keeps his head down, he minds his business, and he puts in the work he needs to. Since he got here, he’s been around me.

“I told him just be around me and I promise you that I’ll help take you to a good, good place. One thing I need him to do is understand that he’s on the team. Josh and I will be talking, and any time Michigan’s brought up, he’ll refer to Michigan as you guys, as if he’s not on the team at the moment.

“He’s been doing a great job. You know, he’s daily trying to meet with Coach Clink to learn the playbook. He’s always around Will Johnson trying to work on technique. So I know for a fact he’s a guy that wants to get better.

“He’s a guy who’s gonna come in and immediately impact the room in the sense of getting other guys to compete, getting other guys to work hard, and just giving that extra push because no one wants a guy to come in and take their spot. But coming in, you want to take somebody’s spot.

“It’s going to increase the level of competitiveness in the room. I think there’s a good amount of guys right now that could play in that second cornerback spot. I can’t wait to watch the battle and be a part of the battle during camp.”
