There’s been a common thought that Michigan football needs to add another wide receiver in the spring transfer window and on Wednesday, the Wolverines made the top six for Kyle Ford, a former UCLA wideout.
Ford started his career at USC. He transferred to UCLA and had 22 receptions for 236 yards and a touchdown. Before that, Ford caught 40 passes for 637 yards and five touchdowns in four seasons with the Trojans.
At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, he would be the veteran wideout Michigan needs. He also has more size than the current guys on the roster such as Tyler Morris, Semaj Morgan, and Fredrick Moore. Ford isn’t a superstar by any means, but he does have 62 career receptions and has played in a power conference.
UCLA also ran the ball a lot last season, which means he’ll be used to blocking. Not surprisingly, Ohio State is in the mix for Ford. His former head coach is now the OC. USC, South Carolina, Florida, and Wake Forest are too. Getting him on campus for a visit is the next step, but considering Michigan’s need for a wideout, it makes sense for both sides.
Former 4-star WR leaves the program
Christian Dixon came to Michigan football with plenty of promise as a four-star wideout from Mater Dei. However, he only played six games during his career with one reception for seven yards. Dixon entered the transfer portal on Wednesday after trying to move to defensive back.
There wasn’t any buzz about Dixon this spring and it just didn’t click in Ann Arbor. We’ll see if he heads back to a program in California but his time as a Wolverine is over. We wish him the best of luck.
Jake Thaw finds a new home
Last but not least, former punt returner/wide receiver Jake Thaw who saved the Rose Bowl with his heads-up recovery after a muffed punt has found a new home. I still don’t know how he controlled that ball and avoided a fumble and a safety but it was crucial to the national championship.
It was an incredible play. Thaw, who sometimes disagreed with that, will get to show what he can more at Delaware where he will finish his career playing in a winged helmet.
