Last night, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, MI, the Michigan football program marched in and made history against Michigan State football. The Spartans, who are now 2-5 on the year (0-4 Big Ten), were outmatched in every aspect; in fact, the score could have been worse, but JJ McCarthy and other starters were taken out early. Not only did the Wolverines make Jim Harbaugh-era history, but Michigan made team history in the modern era.
Michigan football program makes history with win over MSU
The last time Michigan football hung 49 points on Michigan State football was in 2002, when Lloyd Carr’s Wolverines killed the Spartans 49-3 at the Big House in Ann Arbor. While Jim Harbaugh already had a solid blowout win over MSU (44-10 in 2019), this year’s game was a record-breaker.
In the last 100 years of Michigan football history, there have only been two 49-point wins in the rivalry against Michigan State (on either side). In 1926, the Wolverines won 55-3; in 1947, Michigan won 55-0 — both of those games were also in Ann Arbor, not East Lansing.
Additionally, yesterday’s win over MSU was the first time since the year 2000 that a shutout was recorded against Michigan State — the Wolverines won 14-0 23 years ago, so this fall’s win was much more impressive, to say the least.
For those wondering, Michigan football is also one step closer to picking up a 1,000th win in program history, becoming the first college football team to do so. If the Wolverines keep on winning, Michigan can get to 1,001 with a victory over Ohio State in Week 13.
