ANN ARBOR, Mich.Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy is entering his third year with the Maize and Blue and his second season as the Wolverines’ full-time starting QB — a position he earned during Week 2 of the 2022 season. With the 2023 college football season just 24 days away, McCarthy is focused on emphasizing his decision-making and ability to run the football throughout the Wolverines’ upcoming campaign.

Michigan football quarterback looking to add more versatile approach in 2023

Last year, as a first-year starter, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy showed signs of greatness but did not fully stand out as one of the best quarterbacks in college football until the end of the year. After one of his worst games (Illinois) of the 2022 season, the Wolverines’ sophomore quarterback gathered himself and played a lights-out game in Columbus, leading Michigan to an impressive 45-23 victory over Ohio State.

Heading into the new season, JJ McCarthy says that he is working on a few key aspects of his game, including his God-given ability to use his legs.

“A lot of hours I put in just reevaluating myself and analyzing some of the games and some of the gameplay I put out there,” Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy said on Monday. “Most of it has just been decision-making. Playing faster on time, more in rhythm, knowing when to run. God gave me this great ability to use my legs, I gotta use them more. Being more meshed with the receivers and the chemistry and knowing like, ‘this guy is a little bit faster on this guy so you’ve gotta put a little bit less on the ball,’ little stuff like that.

“Just a lot of reevaluating the little stuff and getting back to playing on time and in rhythm,” McCarthy concluded.

When the 2023 season rolls around, don’t be too surprised if you witness JJ McCarthy utilizing his legs more, thereby creating a more versatile threat for the Michigan football offense. This evolution could potentially lead to a Big Ten title, a College Football Playoff berth, and further success for the third consecutive year.
