Last weekend, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy went 8 for 13, totaling 143 yards through the air with a pair of touchdown passes and three interceptions. McCarthy’s poor Week 3 performance was enough to lead the Maize and Blue to a 31-6 victory all said and done; however, it has the fan base worried about what is to come for the Wolverines, who begin Big Ten conference play this weekend against Rutgers. Still, offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore doubled down on his confidence in Michigan’s elite junior QB after the game.
Michigan football quarterback gets nod of confidence from OC Sherrone Moore
This weekend, Michigan football will kick off Big Ten play against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who come to Ann Arbor following a solid victory over Virginia Tech last weekend. While the Wolverines remain the No. 2 team in the country right now, there are some justified concerns about Michigan after stumbling to a 25-point victory last weekend.
In Weeks 1 and 2, JJ McCarthy was lights out, boasting the nation’s best QBR and more; however, against Bowling Green, there were clear signs of struggle from the entire offense. After a three-interception game, the Michigan football quarterback and his offense need to bounce back better than ever this weekend when Rutgers comes to town.
“We just tell him to — if he’s gonna throw it out, throw it out of bounds,” Michigan football OC Sherrone Moore said, talking about McCarthy’s third pick of the game. “That’s JJ (McCarthy), he’s trying to make a play. And sometimes that happens when you try to make a play that things like that take place.
“So it’s a learning experience for him,” Moore continued. “He’s obviously played extremely well in the first two games, so we still have trust and faith in him. Still our quarterback, still love him. And those are things that he’ll learn from, and he’ll definitely get better at from.
“One of them was, like I said, it was a spacing issue,” Sherrone Moore said, breaking down all three JJ McCarthy interceptions. “And then the other one was a decision. So those things come into play, and we just got to continue to fix those, and I know we will.”
Despite slow game against Bowling Green, JJ McCarthy and the Wolverines remain among the nation’s best
JJ McCarthy and Michigan football veteran wide receiver Cornelius Johnson connected for a touchdown on a pass that was nearly a fourth interception. After the game, Moore gave his thoughts on that play as well.
“Again, that’s one of those plays that’s like, ‘Okay, well, he made it now. Everybody’s happy.’ If he didn’t, people would be on him,” Sherrone Moore explained. “So like, it was (risky), but it was a good enough throw that he knew that CJ (Cornelius Johnson) would go fight for it. So we just got to continue to be on the same page to help us complete those passes like that.”
So, despite a poor Week 3 performance, the team and coaching staff still have 100% confidence in Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy heading into this weekend’s matchup against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, which will be the first of the Wolverines’ nine-game Big Ten schedule. If Michigan can fix a number of small issues on offense and special teams, the Wolverines could make a push for a third-straight Big Ten Championship and more by season’s end.
