Yesterday, for the first time since mid-November of last year, Michigan football running back Blake Corum had the chance to suit up and get some serious reps. It has been months since Corum was last healthy enough to be a force for the Wolverines, and while he did not have the most impressive game of his career, he says that his old knee injury is feeling great.

Michigan football running back provides Week 1 update on knee injury

Blake Corum, a potential Heisman Trophy contender for Michigan football, finally got back on the field after months of injury recovery and more. He carried the football 10 times for 73 yards and a touchdown — his most impressive carry was a 37-yard run in the third quarter. Now, these aren’t the incredible numbers that many fans are used to from Corum, but it was only his first game back, and he is still shaking off the rust right now.

After the game, the Michigan football running back explained how his knee injury was feeling during the Wolverines’ Week 1 win over East Carolina.

“It felt great being back out there — being able to cut, make some long runs, and you know, for me, that was my first time honestly getting hit since the Ohio State game,” Michigan football running back Blake Corum said. “But it just felt great, man. It was kind of like a warm-up. This is what I’ve been working for, this is what I’ve kind of been offseason training for. It just felt great being back out there with the guys. Like I said, more to come. I’m just excited to go back to the drawing table because definitely not satisfied with some of my runs. But it was a great team win.

“I mean, I feel great,” Blake Corum continued. “Last season, the first three games, I didn’t go over 100 either. But you take those games and you kind of get back in the rhythm or your things, the way you see things. And like I said, ECU did a phenomenal job at stopping the run. You know, that was their game plan and they did a pretty good job. But we still had a run game. It wasn’t like it wasn’t there. And if we really wanted to, we probably coulda tried to get over 100 yards — me or Donovan or any of the other running backs, but why? We have guys like (Roman Wilson) and (JJ McCarthy) that can just sling that thing. So you know, like I said, it felt good man.”

Blake Corum looking to get back into the mix, but could see fewer reps due to increased balance

With Sherrone Moore — the team’s offensive line coach and full-time offensive play-caller — returning to the sidelines for Week 2, Blake Corum could get more carries than before. That said, if junior quarterback JJ McCarthy continues to impress (he went 26/30 for 280 yards and three touchdowns yesterday), there is a chance that the offense will remain quite balanced, as we saw on Saturday.
