Since his freshman season came to an end, rising Michigan football sophomore defensive line standout Kenneth Grant has dropped an incredible 20 pounds. During fall camp, Grant is still learning how to best use his new frame, but so far, it appears that he is maximizing all 339 pounds.
Michigan football sophomore drops 20 pounds, has a brand new frame for fall camp
Last year, Michigan football listed defensive tackle Kenneth Grant at a whopping 359 pounds as a true freshman. Now, Grant is down to 339, which is still massive, but gives him a new look and more benefits to go along with his impressive size. Seeing as the Wolverines need a few younger defensive linemen to step up at tackle this year, this new-look sophomore could be the perfect candidate.
“Coach Herb (Ben Herbert) did a really good job,” Kenneth Grant said on Monday when asked about his incredible offseason changes. “I really focused with him and Abigail (O’Connor) on nutrition to really get down and be compact and put more muscle on. So I’m definitely happier with that. I move a lot better.”
Kenneth Grant goes in-depth on his offseason changes
How did Grant drop this much weight in a single offseason without losing muscle?
“Really just working out heavy,” he stated. “I started creatine, that really helped it, gave me a lot of energy.”
Grant will need to update his style
Going from almost 360 pounds to just under 340 pounds is a big change for this Michigan football sophomore — while it has benefitted him, it will undoubtedly force Kenneth Grant to change up how he plays the game.
“It changed me a lot,” Grant continued. “I can be on the field a lot more, I have a lot more stamina. Our conditioning test — that really helped. I passed it with ease, to be honest. What you should expect more is for me to be on the field more. Not just on a run down, I can contribute on a pass too and go for long drives.”
So far, so good for the Michigan football sophomore defensive tackle
Grant’s comments about conditioning turned a few heads — was conditioning an issue for Grant before this weight loss?
“Not really,” he said, “but it definitely helped. It made me realize how more agile and faster I could be if I just lost some weight.”
With a brand new, notably lighter frame this year, Michigan football sophomore defensive line standout Kenneth Grant could be in the running for a new and improved role with the Wolverines. Michigan needs the size and talent that he possesses up the middle, so having him around should do wonders for the defense.
