If you thought sign-stealing was a big deal, just wait until you hear about what Alabama football did last weekend. With just weeks to go until the Crimson Tide face the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff semi-final, Nick Saban hired George Helow, who coached linebackers at the University of Michigan from 2021 through February of this year. On Monday, Michigan football linebacker Junior Colson was asked about his former linebackers coach being hired by Bama — below is his response.

Michigan football star Junior Colson explains feelings behind George Helow being hired by Alabama football

Junior Colson, a superstar linebacker for Michigan football and this year’s Lott Impact Trophy winner, and his fellow Wolverines are in the thick of CFP preparation for their matchup against Alabama football in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2024. While Michigan remains favored, according to Vegas’s latest betting odds, it appears that Alabama head coach Nick Saban is pulling out all the stops to even the playing field.

Colson ahead of facing former coach in College Football Playoff: “Just different”

In fact, over the weekend, Bama went and hired an ex-Michigan football coach — George Helow — who was on-staff until earlier this year, when he and U-M parted ways. The move made room for the school to hire Chris Partridge, who has since been fired.

“Just different,” Junior Colson said of the hire on Monday. “It’s like, they (Alabama) might be a little scared. But you never know. But he’s got a job; I’m happy for him. I’m excited for him. I’m happy — I’ll probably say what’s up to him after the game. So just you just gotta go out there and play ball.”

No advantages in football, Colson says

The Michigan football star also made sure to slip in a notable quote about gaining an advantage in the sport of football. Per Junior Colson, even if you have the other team’s entire playbook, you still have to go play ball.

“You can’t really have an advantage in football,” Colson said. “It doesn’t matter if you know somebody’s whole playbook, you’ve still gotta stop it. So you can’t really have an advantage in football. You’ve gotta go out there, play ball, and let the dice roll how it rolls.”

Michigan football will face ex-Wolverine coach George Helow and his new team, Alabama, in the Rose Bowl on January 1 for a shot at the national title game.
