Over the weekend, for the first time since his injury last fall, Michigan football star running back Blake Corum rushed for over 100 yards in a single game. On top of that, the senior superstar punched in two touchdowns during the Wolverines’ 31-6 victory over Bowling Green, which improved Michigan’s record to 3-0 this year. Yesterday, Corum delved into where he is at in his progressions as a back and more — he is happy with his performance, but nowhere close to satisfied with the product he puts on the field each week.

Michigan football star running back breaks down progression back after recovery

Blake Corum is starting to look like the Michigan football star that fans know and love — the one who led the way to an 11-0 start last year before being sidelined with an injury in Week 12.

“I like where I’m at with my progression,” the Michigan football star running back explained on Monday. “I’m never where I want to be. I always feel like I can do better after every game. I don’t care if I rush for 300 yards, I’m still gonna think I can do better. I think last game — I had a great week of practice last week, full speed, I was bringing up long runs in practice, trying to get those in-game reps. And I feel like I did pretty well in the Bowling Green game, in terms of cutting and agility, side-to-side movement. But still, room to improve to get where I want to go. But I’m happy where I’m at. I feel like I’m almost back to myself in terms of what you ask.”

Blake Corum has adjusted to the contact

Blake Corum did not get hit much in fall camp due to his fall injury, which is something that takes some getting used to. While Corum says he is back in rhythm now, he also admitted that it took a moment to adjust.

“I didn’t get hit much in camp, but I’ve appreciated every rep that I’ve gotten these last three games,” Corum said. “I believe maybe I’ve been hit, I think it was like 37 times or something like that. And it feels great. The first week I woke up, I was sore. But these last two weeks, I haven’t been really sore, and I definitely appreciate those live reps — having someone in your face right away, having to make a cut, just the game of football. So even though I didn’t do much in camp, I appreciate these last three games, and I’m ready for Big Ten play.”

50+ touches in a game for the Michigan football running back?

When Michigan football running back coach Mike Hart was in college, he once touched the ball 51 times in a single game. According to Blake Corum, whether he gets nine touches or over 50 like Hart did many years ago, he just wants to see the Wolverines win.

“Whatever they need me to do,” Blake Corum said when asked about his ideal workload. “Whether that’d be 10, 9, 14 or 20 or 30. You know, you name it, I’m here. Like I said, my body’s good. I’m ready to rock and roll. So, if it’s a game where they need me to touch it 30 times? Please. … Whatever they need me to do.” he continued. “Whether that’d be 10, 9, 14 or 20 or 30. You know, you name it, I’m here. Like I said, my body’s good. I’m ready to rock and roll. So, if it’s a game where they need me to touch it 30 times? Please.

“40 (touches in a game)? Sure,” Corum said. “I think Coach Hart said he had a couple of games in the 40s. 51, there we go. If they need me to touch it 51 times, then give it to me 51 times, Coach Hart. Whatever the team needs, I’m here. I don’t really care, I just want to win. That’s what this game is about is winning. And that’s what we’re here to do — win.”

Wolverines ready to take the field and kick off Big Ten play this weekend

This weekend, for the first time since his injury last November against Illinois, Michigan football star Blake Corum will take the field against a Big Ten foe. On Saturday, the undefeated Rutgers Scarlet Knights come to town, serving as the Wolverines’ Big Ten conference opener and Jim Harbaugh’s first game back as head coach following his three-game suspension.
