Tomorrow will be the Wolverines’ first road game of the 2023 season, with the Maize and Blue making the trip out to Lincoln, NE, for an away contest against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. This week, we heard a lot about the game from a number of Michigan football stars, who are all hyped to be playing in a tough environment in Week 5. Here is what Will Johnson, Blake Corum, JJ McCarthy, and Drake Nugent had to say this week.
Michigan football stars talk first road game expectations
This week, Michigan football stars are buzzing about the team’s first road game of the 2023 season. While Nebraska (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) is not the toughest Big Ten team the Wolverines will face this fall, the Huskers are a solid team with a great rushing offense, the No. 1 rushing defense, and an incredible stadium atmosphere.
Will Johnson
“I think every week we take it just as seriously,” Michigan football cornerback Will Johnson said. “I think this week is a big week for us to be detailed and be disciplined because, on the road, it’s just a different environment. At Nebraska, they’re known for being a very hostile environment. They’ve got a great team out there. So being disciplined, being detailed, definitely.”
Blake Corum
“Each and every week, we try to take it up a notch because it’s another week to watch film and critique ourselves,” Blake Corum said. “Like I was saying, we hold ourselves to such a high standard, there’s always gonna be room to improve. I don’t care how good we are. So going on the road — I love road games. You go into their stadium and take over. You have the opportunity to take over and we’re gonna make sure we take advantage of that, and it’s gonna be a great week of work. And I can’t wait for next Saturday.”
JJ McCarthy
“I’m not gonna lie to you, road games are probably my favorite,” JJ McCarthy explained. “I love the big house, and it’s an amazing atmosphere, but there’s something about going into someone else’s building and hearing all the boos and feeling all the hate, like, it just — I’m getting chills right now. It just brings a different spark and ignites a different fire inside of us. And, you know, there’s nothing better than going into a stadium that’s jumping and going crazy, and then by halftime, it’s as quiet as a mouse. So that’s what we’re going to try to do this weekend but, you know, tremendous respect for Nebraska and their defense. Coach Tony White’s done a great job. They’re very well coached and I just can’t wait for it because it’s going to be a great test for us.”
Drake Nugent
“Yeah, we’ve got music turned up and whatnot, and crowd noise put on, just as any team probably would when they’re going on away environment,” Michigan football transfer center Drake Nugent said. “I mean, these guys have told me that it’s loud and I’ve heard that before. But like, it’s just another ball game and just gotta be on top of our stuff with the count and know what we’re doing each play and just make sure we’re all on the same page.”
Michigan football ready for a solid Week 5 test against Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Wolverines enter tomorrow’s game as 17-point favorites against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who have some injury issues at quarterback and have been struggling so far this year. While Nebraska is not the best matchup for Michigan football on paper, it’s clear that the Huskers are coming into this weekend’s game with a massive upset win on their minds.
