Michigan football talks to recruits about passing the ball more

Running the ball is important. But if you want elite wide receivers, throwing the ball is important too. Michigan football has been more of a run-oriented team in the last few seasons.

The Wolverines have trusted the offensive line and running backs to carry most of the load. Colston Loveland made some incredible catches last season and he’s the true No. 1 target in the passing game.

Running the ball 32 times in a row to beat someone is awesome in my opinion. But it might not be great to hear if you’re a five-star wideout who wants as many targets as possible. Every player wants to win. They also want to show what they can do for NFL scouts.

Michigan football working against a narrative

That’s why it’s been a little more difficult with the Wolverines and wide receivers. Yet, things have been trending up for Michigan football with five-star wideout Derek Matthews, who called his recent visit to Ann Arbor “incredible.”

His dad also told Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider that there are more plans to throw the football according to the coaching staff. “I think coach Kirk Campbell was open and honest… if they have a strong receiving corps, they’re going to pass the ball more.”

The quarterback position factors into that as well but Michigan football should throw the ball more. It should have thrown it more last season. It hasn’t been determined 100 percent if Campbell or Sherrone Moore will call the plays. If it’s Campbell, more pass plays are coming but if Moore keeps those duties, you can expect a lot more smash.

You can probably expect that even if he’s not calling the plays. That’s who he is and that’s how this program has won. But Roman Wilson just went in the second round of the draft. Loveland might go in the first, so as far as getting dudes to the NFL, Michigan football is doing just fine.
