It wasn’t long ago that Michigan football was basically an afterthought for Marquise Davis, a four-star running back from Cleveland, Ohio, ranked No. 172 overall in the 2025 class.

That was before Tony Alford was hired away from Ohio State by Michigan football to be the Wolverines running backs coach. That changed everything in terms of running back recruiting. There haven’t been any commitments yet, but the Wolverines are trending in the right direction with some key targets — Davis being one of them.

Davis recently took an unofficial visit to Michigan football. It was clear that the Wolverines were back in the mix, thanks to Alford. Now, that’s even more clear as an official visit has been scheduled according to Allen Trieu of 247 Sports.

Top running back target to visit Michigan football

The 6-foot, 190-pound running back out of Cleveland is ranked as the seventh-best player in the state of Ohio according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 13 running back. Davis told Chad Simmons of On3.com that he had a “great time” on his last visit to Ann Arbor. It also looks like that visit helped Michigan football become a serious player in this recruitment again.

Ohio State picked up an expert projection for Jordon Davison, a Michgan football target, but that could be good news for Davis or Bo Jackson, another top target from Ohio for the Wolverines. Landing running back Jordan Marshall was a huge win and if the Wolverines can follow it up with Davis or Jackson, Michigan fans would be thrilled, as they should be.

But also as a running back, why wouldn’t you want to play for a program that actually runs the ball? Michigan has a lot to sell and we’ll see if the new running backs coach can seal the deal down the road.
