Today, one of the few Michigan football transfer losses announced his commitment to a new University, and it’s turning heads all over the nation. Ex-Wolverine linebacker Joey Velazquez, a five-year veteran at the University of Michigan, a 2024 national champion, and a Columbus, OH, native, will be transferring to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2024.

Michigan football is on a major winning streak against Ohio State right now, downing the Buckeyes three times in a row and remaining undefeated against them since the 2019 season. Still, that is not enough to keep Joey Velazquez, a former Michigan linebacker and letterman in multiple sports at the University of Michigan, from hitting the transfer portal and heading back home to Columbus.

Joey Velazquez made his Michigan football debut back in 2019, and while he did not leave the following season, he has appeared in 19 games in the winged helmet since. He was a major special teams player for the Wolverines and a standout baseball player for Michigan’s nationally recognized baseball program, which recently underwent a coaching change of its own. Of course, there could be many non-athletic reasons that the ex-Wolverine chose to head back to Ohio State — notably, that is where he grew up and where his family resides — though it was a surprising move for many nonetheless.

Joey Velazquez leaves Michigan football via the transfer portal as a seven-time University of Michigan letter-winner (three football, four baseball), a multi-time Big Ten Champion, and a 2024 National Champion.
