Despite the fact that the Wolverines just won a national title, the 2024 season remains full of major question marks for Sherrone Moore and his squad. Jim Harbaugh left, and took several top coaches with him, as well as Blake Corum, JJ McCarthy, and many others opting to leave Ann Arbor for the NFL as well. Recently, 247 Sports released its way-too-early rankings for the coming season, and despite the many unknowns that Michigan football is facing, the Maize and Blue still find themselves among the nation’s best.

The 2024 season is going to be a historic one regardless of how things pan out for Michigan football during the first season of the Sherrone Moore era. With the playoff expanding to 12 teams, the Big Ten expanding to 18 teams, and the transfer portal and NIL still running wild, a lot is going on in the world of college football.

That said, despite all that is going on and Michigan’s major coaching and roster losses, 247 Sports expects the 2024 season to be kind to the Wolverines — perhaps a fourth-straight CFP berth, but likely not a Big Ten title.

247 Sports lists Michigan football as the No. 7 team nationally and the No. 3 team in the Big Ten Conference (behind the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks) heading into the year. Of course, being the second-best team in the conference, if U-M can get there, will be enough to send Michigan to the Big Ten title game for the fourth season in a row now that the conference has ridden itself of the East and West divisions.

Ahead of the Wolverines are some of the usual suspects, as well as a few new faces. Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Ole Miss, and Alabama are all ranked ahead of Michigan football in these way-too-early 2024 rankings. Behind the Wolverines are three more Big Ten teams: Penn State (No. 10), USC (No. 19), and Washington (No. 25).

On Michigan’s 2024 season slate are four of the 247’s top 25, including three of the top-five teams. Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, and Washington are all foes that the Wolverines will face this fall in what is sure to be a grueling — yet thrilling — season for Michigan football and its fans.
