There have been two regular, full-length college football seasons so far this decade. In both years, the Michigan Wolverines football program won 12 or more games, claiming back-to-back Big Ten titles and appearing in the College Football Playoff twice. Additionally, the Wolverines are 2-0 against Penn State and Ohio State and are 19-1 overall in Big Ten play. That said, ESPN’s updated Football Power Index rankings have the Maize and Blue behind Texas, LSU, Ohio State, and more, sitting just outside of the top-5 nationally.

Michigan Wolverines football ranked outside of top-5 in newest Football Power Index rankings

Recently, the first coaches poll of 2023 was released, and Michigan football is ranked No. 2 nationally. In fact, the Wolverines are pinned as the 2nd-best team (behind Georgia) in just about every preseason poll right now — yet that has not stopped ESPN’s Football Power Index from ranking Michigan at No. 6.

Recently, the FPI updated its rankings, and these five teams are head of Michigan football (in order):

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes
  2. Alabama Crimson Tide
  3. Georgia Bulldogs
  4. LSU Tigers
  5. Texas Longhorns
  6. Michigan Wolverines

Now, in fairness, Michigan football has entered the past two seasons as underdogs against Ohio State and more, so this is really nothing new. Throughout the coming season, the Wolverines will once again be taking everything one game at a time in hopes of beating Ohio State (again), winning the Big Ten (again), and finally making a massive push for the national title.
