Michigan football breaks top 3 in first coaches poll of the 2023 college football season

This fall, Michigan football is looking to capture its first national title in nearly three decades, and right now, it appears that the Maize and Blue are poised to do exactly that. From veterans and newcomers on defense to experience at quarterback and more, this year appears to be Jim Harbaugh’s best roster as the head coach of the Wolverines. That says a lot, considering Harbaugh has coached some impressive teams during his 8 years as head coach in Ann Arbor.

Today, the first coaches’ poll of the 2023 college football season was released, with less than a month until kickoff (against East Carolina on September 2nd). Michigan football currently sits at No. 2 nationally, only behind Georgia.

Other notable Big Ten East teams that made the list include the Ohio State Buckeyes, who rank 4th nationally, and the Penn State Nittany Lions, who sit at 7th nationally. Michigan football will play both of these Big Ten powerhouses this November — Penn State is a road game, while Ohio State will be a Week 13 matchup at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI.

As always, it’s important to remember that this ranking means very little — it shows that expectations are high, but the only ranking that truly matters is the season’s final polls.
