Over the weekend, Michigan football crushed the Michigan State Spartans, 49-0 in East Lansing — perhaps the Spartans’ worst home loss in the modern era of college football. After the game, MSU coach Harlon Bennett, who is acting as the Spartans’ interim coach in place of a fired Mel Tucker, was blunt about his team’s embarrassing performance against the Wolverines.

While MSU linebacker Aaron Brule was far less graceful about his team’s 49-point home loss against Michigan football, the Spartans’ interim head coach was far more realistic and blunt about the game. This year’s “State Championship Game” was one that no one expected the Michigan State Spartans to win; however, a nearly 50-point loss in their own building was also not something that many saw coming, especially given the competitive nature of the rivalry regardless of records in most years.

“Whether you lose by one or 49, it’s a loss, first of all,” MSU coach Harlon Bennett explained. “… It might be (a low point for Michigan State football). I thought it was low last week (against Rutgers), and then lower. You’ve got to shake it off and keep fighting. That’s all I know — got to shake it off and keep fighting.”

Harlon Bennett says Michigan State got its ‘butt kicked’

Harlon Bennett could have easily pinned the loss on a number of things, including allegations of sign-stealing that surfaced against the Michigan football program last Thursday. That said, he kept it blunt — Michigan State was simply the second-best team on the field that night.

“We played a top-10 team,” Bennett said. “They (Michigan football) were superior to us tonight. Got our butts kicked. We’ve got to learn from it. The 24-hour rule is in still in place, and we’ve got Minnesota next up.”

With the win over Michigan State, Michigan football improved to 8-0 on the year (5-0 Big Ten) heading into this weekend’s well-deserved bye. Next weekend, the Wolverines will face Purdue under the lights before traveling to Happy Valley for a massive game against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
