The NCAA is considering canceling the spring transfer portal with a proposal already advancing through the legislative process, according to a report from Ross Dellenger.
The move would go into effect during the upcoming spring cycle, eliminating the 15-day portal window open in April. The NCAA Football Oversight Committee has already recommended the elimination of the window to the Division I Council.
If the window is eliminated, it will have major effects on the offseason recruiting cycle. Players would only be allowed to enter the transfer portal during the 30-day period in the winter (December 9 – January 7).
Any player who enters the transfer portal outside the allowed period requires a waiver to gain immediate eligibility at their new school.

The removal of the spring transfer portal has several big supporters
The NCAA landscape will have a different feel in 2024 due to conference realignment.
There are now only four power conferences following the decimation of the Pac-12. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC – along with the American Football Coaches Association – support eliminating the spring transfer portal.
A decision on the matter is expected to come over the next few weeks.
As things stand, the spring transfer portal is set for April 16 through April 30.
