After nearly 30 years without a National Championship, Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines just brought a title back to Ann Arbor, MI, going 15-0 and beating both Alabama and Washington in the College Football Playoffs. Yesterday, a new SI report from Michael Rosenberg revealed some key intel when it comes to Harbaugh’s NFL interest heading into the 2024 offseason.

Michigan football coach may stay with UM, says new SI report

Jim Harbaugh is 40-3 with three Big Ten titles, three CFP appearances, and a National Championship over the past three seasons — an elite start to the decade, to say the least. On Monday, Michigan football won its first national title since the 1997 season, though with the offseason underway, the storylines around the program largely involve Harbaugh and his interest in the NFL. On Thursday, a new SI report revealed new intel on some potential early leanings of Harbaugh that bode well for the Maize and Blue.

“People around Harbaugh and the Michigan program have a very different impression: He could leave, but he prefers to stay at Michigan,” reads Sports Illustrated’s report. “… People familiar with the discussions say Harbaugh wants contractual assurance that, if the NCAA comes down hard on him based on information the school already has, Michigan cannot then fire him ‘for cause.’

“… Michigan administrators have work to do, but they should be able to keep Harbaugh. He loves his team and he loves his school. If he believes both feelings are mutual, then who has it better than him?”

Michigan pushing hard to keep Jim Harbaugh from jumping to the NFL

Warde Manuel and the University of Michigan football program have some work to do to get Jim Harbaugh to stick around; however, as the SI report says, there is a general feeling that he is willing to stay with the Wolverines. He is Michigan’s first National Championship-winning coach since Lloyd Carr, and frankly, is one of — perhaps the — most beloved figures in the state right now.

Regardless of what the NCAA decides to do in regard to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football in its sign-stealing and recruiting investigations, U-M clearly wants Harbaugh to stick around, and will likely put an incredible offer on the table in hopes of deterring him from jumping back to the NFL.
