HOUSTON — We’re less than 24 hours removed from Michigan football star Will Johnson and his Wolverines winning the program’s first National Championship in nearly three decades; however, the national spotlight is already on Jim Harbaugh and the NFL rumors that have surrounded him for years. While no one is sure what Harbaugh will do, or where Harbaugh will go, it’s clear that the sophomore Wolverine is not too concerned with that right now.

Will Johnson came in clutch last night, leading Michigan’s No. 1-ranked defense to an incredible game against the most explosive offense in college football: Washington. Despite scoring a lot on other top-ranked defenses, such as Oregon and Texas, the Huskies managed a mere 13 points with a handful of turnovers and many mistakes against the best defense in the land: the Michigan Wolverines.

Today, however, the storylines are back to being around Jim Harbaugh and his coming NFL decision. Many believe that Harbaugh has a lot of interest in leaving for the league, yet those around the Michigan football program believe that the Wolverines could still keep their 9th-year head coach in Ann Arbor.

Thoughts on the NFL rumors from sophomore defensive back Will Johnson

This morning, Will Johnson shared some of his thoughts.

“There’s a reason why (NFL teams are) so interested in him,” the Michigan football star said. “He’s a great coach. He deserves to be looked at in that light. But I’m not too worried about it. I trust whatever decision he makes is best for him and best for the team, and I’m just trying to enjoy where we are right now and worry about anything like that when the time comes.”

More from Blake Corum

Blake Corum won’t be around in 2024, unlike Will Johnson, yet he still had some words to add about Michigan football and what comes next for his head coach, Jim Harbaugh.

“Like (Will Johnson) said, Coach Harbaugh is such a phenomenal coach, and if you look up just his legacy as a player and as a coach, he’s won everywhere he’s gone,” Corum said. “And maybe it took a couple of years, but Coach, at the end of the day, is a winning coach. And he’s won every single place he’s been to.

“So who wouldn’t want him? Who has it better than Coach Harbaugh? Nobody! When things come up like that, we’re like, ‘Hey, Coach, you’ve got to do what’s best for you.’ But we stick to the task at hand. When have you a great coach like that, everyone wants a piece of you. I’m just glad the University of Michigan has Coach Harbaugh.”

For the time being, it sounds like even Jim Harbaugh is unsure of what may come next — he seems to be soaking in the National Championship and focused on nothing else right now. That said, the NFL will come calling, and for the ninth year in a row, Harbaugh will have a decision to make.

Still, with Sherrone Moore waiting in the wings and a massive contract ready for him from the University of Michigan football program, it appears that the Wolverines have their bases covered and will be ready for anything.
