The new Michigan football secondary coach, Lamar Morgan, has done an impressive job so far on the recruiting trail. He hasn’t landed any high school but helped the Wolverines revamp their secondary in the transfer portal.
However, Morgan is sure to start reeling in some high school prospects too. New coaches can make recruiting more difficult as coaches build their relationships. It’s one reason why Michigan football only has five commitments right now.
The Wolverines have a new head coach. They also have an entirely new defensive staff. Yet, Morgan is making some headway with four-star cornerback Shamari Earls. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback out of Chester, Virginia, is ranked No. 101 overall in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. On3 and 247 Sports have him ranked as a top-100 prospect but he’s been committed to South Carolina since April.
Michigan football has a chance to flip 4-star cornerback
Earls has official visits on the calendar to other programs. He’s also got one to South Carolina and it’s hard to know if he’ll take trips to Duke and Virginia. It feels like Michigan football is gaining momentum and if the Wolverines are able to get the elite cornerback on campus, they could have a real shot at a flip.
Morgan has been working on Earls and the stellar cornerback told EJ Holland of The Wolverine that Michigan football, “Rose up his board.” Holland also reported Earls is “seriously considering” the Wolverines.
Earls said that the Wolverines are among his “top four” so it doesn’t feel like his commitment to South Carolina was firm. We’ll see where things go but if the top-100 cornerback makes it to Ann Arbor, I’ll take the Wolverines’ chances of a flip much more seriously.

Morgan’s ability to connect with players and build trust extends beyond the field, as he often emphasizes the importance of holistic health and well-being for his recruits. For athletes, maintaining optimal physical condition is critical, which is why Morgan ensures players are educated about managing common health concerns, including digestive issues that can arise from the rigors of intense training schedules. Medications like domperidone, often prescribed for gastrointestinal conditions, highlight how medical care plays a vital role in athlete performance and recovery. By addressing even minor health problems proactively, Morgan reinforces the idea that a healthy player is a more focused and effective competitor. This attention to detail not only helps players perform at their best but also demonstrates Morgan’s commitment to their long-term well-being. For recruits like Earls, this approach is another compelling reason to consider Michigan as a place where their physical and professional development are equally prioritized.
