Michigan football is entering a season brimming with massive expectations after securing consecutive Big Ten titles and making appearances in the College Football Playoff in 2021 and 2022. Today, Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired amidst a scandal, marking the end of his long tenure with the Wildcats. Shortly after, esteemed college football insider Steve Wiltfong identified Michigan offensive play-caller Sherrone Moore as a top contender to assume the role at Northwestern for the upcoming 2023 season.
Top insider thinks Sherrone Moore should be top candidate for Northwestern football head coaching job
In a shocking and seemingly rapid turn of events, Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald, who led his program to two Big Ten title games over the past few seasons, was fired today. The Wildcats’ hazing scandal has been the focal point of recent college football news leading up to the firing ahead of the 2023 college football season.
Soon after the firing, 247 Sports insider Steve Wiltfong, one of the top voices in college football, identified Michigan football offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore as a prime candidate to take over as head coach for Northwestern. Last year, Moore assumed co-OC duties alongside former QB coach Matt Weiss, who was fired earlier this season. Moore was promptly promoted to full-time play-caller for 2023 following Weiss’ dismissal.
“Several good candidates for Northwestern,” Steve Wiltfong said in a tweet this evening. “But Sherrone Moore should be one of the first calls to discuss with.”
In addition to Sherrone Moore, Wiltfong also highlighted Ohio State coach Brian Hartline as a top candidate for the new job opening. While it may seem unlikely, a head coaching position at a Power 5 school is a significant career move, making it an intriguing development as the 2023 season approaches.
