Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore walks off the field after 38-17 loss to Oregon at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Michigan football (5-5) was close to an upset over No. 8 Indiana on Saturday but fell short 20-15. The Wolverine defense allowed just three points in the final two quarters. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said the defense showed grit.

Sherrone Moore’s Thoughts After Loss

“I thought they did an unbelievable job in the second half,” Moore said. “The fight, the effort – I think they allowed 56 yards (in the half). And just in the game, that offense is averaging 40 something points a game, (so) to hold them to 20 was huge.”

As far as the offense goes, it wasn’t much different than past weeks. Michigan gained just 206 total yards – 137 through the air and 69 on the ground. Moore said the Indiana defensive front made it tough.

“At the end of the day we got to go execute,” Moore said. “We didn’t execute at a high level. There were some twists, some movements, some zone runs that we didn’t pick up and it was one guy here, one guy there, but that was the story when you look back at the iPad. We got to be better.”

Moore was asked if the team’s expectations were too high before the season.

“I think every year we’re going to expect the same standard,” Moore said. “Our job is to go try to meet it. We’re Michigan, and we’re going to continue to fight. We’re going to continue to grind to get better. The loss column is what it is right now. Nobody likes it.”

Michigan finds itself in an unfamiliar spot with two games to go. The Wolverines need to win at least one more game to stay in contention for a bowl game. Moore said that should provide an extra boost of will.

“Our guys want to go play another game,” Moore said. “Another opportunity to play football together (and) put on the helmet, put on the jersey. That will be a motivating factor for sure. But, motivating factor number one is to go win, so that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
