During the fall camp, Head Coach Jim Harbaugh outlined his “secret” plan for sophomore Michigan football quarterback Alex Orji, who seems to be capable of doing it all. According to Harbaugh, Orji has been returning kicks and more, leading up to the 2023 season. In fact, Harbaugh isn’t the only one high on Orji as a diverse player; running back Kalel Mullings outlined a few additional roles for Orji this afternoon, which has the fans buzzing about his potential for the Michigan offense.
Sophomore Michigan football quarterback continues to turn heads
Alex Orji, who first gained fame through the infamous “it’s an Orji in the endzone” call back in 2022, is likely to be QB3 or QB4 for Michigan football this year. However, it sounds like there’s a chance that he could take the field in many other capacities for the Wolverines throughout the season.
“With Orj, it’s not even just kick return,” Kalel Mullings said of sophomore Michigan football quarterback Alex Orji during his media availability on Monday. “It’s really whenever he has the ball. He’s made so many plays where it’s just like, ‘Wow!’ You’re just stunned watching it.”
Alex Orji has people in Ann Arbor “excited”
Mullings, who is also among the players that Jim Harbaugh said were repping as kick returners this fall, didn’t stop there when praising the sophomore Michigan football quarterback.
“Excited to see what he can do in that role,” Mullings continued. “With kick return, there’s so much open space. A big guy like him, being able to just have that freedom in that role, it’s exciting. And you guys are all going to see, because every day in practice, it’s insane. It’s something crazy every play.”
JJ McCarthy is the top dog in this year’s Michigan football quarterback room, and it appears that Davis Warren and Jack Tuttle are still in contention for the QB2 role in case something were to happen to McCarthy. Although Alex Orji might not have a prominent role as a quarterback for the Maize and Blue, there’s little doubt that he will frequently take the field as a multi-role athlete for the Wolverines.
