ANN ARBOR, MI — Right now, the Michigan Wolverines are having yet another huge recruiting weekend. As we speak, the No. 1 player in Maryland (according to On3), Darien Mayo, is in Ann Arbor for his first-ever unofficial visit with the Michigan football program. If Jim Harbaugh and his staff expect to pry him away from some other Big Ten giants, such as Penn State, the time is now to make a move.

Michigan football needs to make a move on Darien Mayo as soon as possible

With a lot of major targets on visits right now (some will bleed into Sunday as well), the Michigan football program needs to act fast. For recruits like Darien Mayo, there is no better time than the present for Harbaugh and his staff to change his mind and climb into his top-choice school list.

Right now, the Recruiting Prediction Machine lists Mayo’s top-3 programs as Maryland (22.9%), Penn State (20.1%), and Virginia (11.7%). Seeing as today is Mayo’s first time in Ann Arbor, there appears to be plenty of time for Harbaugh to get Michigan football among his top choices. That being, there is a good chance that the Nittany Lions, Terrapins, and many others will be looking to get Mayo back on their own respective campuses over the spring and summer to do the same.

According to On3, Darien Mayo is a four-star EDGE prospect, and is ranked as the No. 92 player in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 9 EDGE, and the No. 1 player in the state of Maryland. In fact, recruiting insider EJ Holland claims that Darien Mayo is one of the most important visitors for Michigan football this weekend, and has some of the biggest upside of any player in the nation.

Since the best player in Maryland is currently making a stop in Tree Town, Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan football program need to act fast and make a push for Mayo before another Big Ten program beats the Wolverines to the punch.
