It’s not a secret that Michigan football wants to supplement the cornerback depth it has on the roster. Terrance Brooks was a top target of the coaching staff in the transfer portal, so when he committed to Illinois on Sunday, it was a blow.
Brooks was a 19-game starter at Texas. He felt like a perfect fit. For whatever reason, he felt that Illinois was better for him. When that happened, it was hard to know where the Wolverines would turn. There was contact with former five-star Cormani McClain who committed to Florida on Wednesday.
Yet, a new name has emerged and it’s one that Michigan football fans should be excited about. Aamir Hall is the new cornerback target and the rising senior played last season at Albany of the FCS. I know some fans will roll their eyes, but he was an All-American at that level and he’s 6-foot-1, 200 pounds.
Before last season at Albany, Hall played at Richmond. He started 11 games as a freshman in 2021 and registered 13 pass breakups, plus an interception. He only played in nine games in 2022 before transferring to Albany for the 2023 season, where he had five interceptions and 15 pass breakups.
That earned him All-American honors and according to Matt Zenitz, Hall is visiting Michigan football.
What Aamir Hall could mean for Michigan’s secondary
Like Josh Wallace last season, Hall could step in and start right away. He will have to beat out Ja’Den McBurrows and Jyaire Hill if he winds up committing to the Wolverines, but there’s a good chance with his experience and production that he would start.
That would allow McBurrows to focus on the nickel position, along with Zeke Berry, who is also needed at safety. Michigan football is hoping to add a safety too. Adding one of each would be ideal and help solidify depth at both spots, plus nickel.
Michigan football would have McBurrows and Berry for the nickel job, plus Hill and Hall could compete to start opposite Will Johnson. Adding Jaden Mangham or another safety to fill the void left by the Rod Moore injury would also help.
That way even if Berry and McBurrows just played nickel, Michigan would have Johnson, Hill, Hall (potentially), and Myles Pollard at cornerback, plus Makari Paige, Quentin Johnson, Mangham, or Wesley Walker (potentially), and Brandyn Hillman at safety.
That’s 10 players for essentially five positions in what is Michigan’s base defense for all intents and purposes. The Wolverines would have flexibility, plus a slew of long, athletic cornerbacks to play on the perimeter.
It might not be the perfect transfer portal haul, but Aamir Hall would be a great get at this stage, along with any of the three safeties Michigan football is in contention for.
