One of the final additions to Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 roster was Josh Wallace, a late transfer from the UMass Minutemen during the spring transfer portal window. So far this year, with a lot of injury issues in the defensive secondary, Wallace has been asked to do a lot for his new team, and he has. Earlier this week, we got a mid-season update on the new Michigan football transfer cornerback by way of second-year team captain and standout cornerback Mike Sainristil.

Update on Michigan football transfer cornerback

Last year, after flipping from offense to defense, Mike Sainristil stood out as one of the top cornerbacks in the Big Ten, helping lead the Maize and Blue to massive wins over Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State, a second-straight Big Ten title, and another College Football Playoff berth.

This year, the 5th-year Wolverine is looking to do it all over again, but he needs some help. So far, due to a number of injuries — including star cornerback Will Johnson — Michigan football has needed Josh Wallace to step up and make some big plays. Heading into Week 3, Wallace has been doing exactly that for the Wolverines.

“I feel like he’s done a solid job — he’s doing good,” Mike Sainristil said of the new Michigan football cornerback on Tuesday. “And you know, it’s no surprise to me because he came in, applied himself, got straight to work, straight to asking questions, learning the playbook, being consistent in his details, fundamentals, getting in with the coaches, doing all the necessary things to help himself be successful. So I’m very happy with what he’s done. I can’t wait to see how else he can help us on defenses this year and what more he’s gonna do.”

Josh Wallace continues to make an impact for the Wolverines’ defense

It sounds like a number of injuries Wolverines — specifically cornerback Will Johnson and safety Makari Paige — are ready to go this week. It’s still uncertain whether they will play or not (since Michigan’s opponent is not the strongest, by any means), but regardless, Josh Wallace should see significant playing time this Saturday for the third game in a row.

Keep an eye on No. 12 when the defense takes the field this weekend as Wallace continues to turn heads and make big plays as a member of this year’s elite Michigan football defense.
