Who Will Lead Michigan Football in Receiving in 2024?

Michigan football, NFL Draft, Colston Loveland, AJ Barner

After last season, Michigan football lost three of its top four receivers in wideouts Roman Wilson & Cornelius Johnson and tight end AJ Barner.

While the Wolverines never had an explosive passing game, losing their top three contributors will have an impact.

So, who will take their spot and lead the team in receiving yards for the 2024 season?

Top Candidates to Lead Michigan in Receiving in 2024

This is truly a toss-up as any of Michigan’s receivers could surprise with a breakout season. Given the uncertainty at the starting quarterback position and the amount of offensive production lost, it could be anyone on the depth chart.

With that being said, four likely candidates should lead the team in receiving yards for the 2024 season.

Semaj Morgan

Sophomore Semaj Morgan was sixth on the team last year in receiving yards as a freshman. He will likely be a starter this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is the go-to target at wide receiver.

Last year, the Michigan native had 22 catches for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his reps were on special teams last season as the team’s returner, but fans should anticipate him getting even more snaps on offense.

Colston Loveland

Junior Colston Loveland is a no-brainer to be considered to lead the team in receiving yards in 2024. A tight end from Idaho, Loveland had 45 catches last season for 649 yards and four touchdowns. He seemed like the go-to target in 3rd-and-long situations and delivered most times. He was one of the best tight ends in the country as a sophomore and has the opportunity to be that again this season.

Colston played an integral part in the 2023 game against Ohio State where he had five catches for 88 yards, his longest being 34 yards. He makes big plays when Michigan needs them most.

Tyler Morris

Redshirt sophomore Tyler Morris played a larger part in the offense in the 2nd half of the season. With 13 catches for 197 yards and one touchdown in his sophomore season while playing a large part in the win against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, I anticipate he’ll make a greater impact throughout the 2024 season.

Donovan Edwards

While Donovan Edwards is a running back, he is a true dual threat and a legitimate threat to lead the team in receiving yards. Last season, he was fifth on the team in receiving yards with 30 catches for 249 yards.

However, with Blake Corum departing for the NFL, Edwards will make much more of an impact at running back than a receiver. But, with Michigan’s offense, he will play snaps at receiver as well so don’t count him out of the conversation.

Our Final Verdict

I think Colston Loveland will have a breakout year – even more so than the prior two seasons.

As one of the only returning starters with a lot of experience, he will only improve for the Wolverines. He will be the go-to target in most passing plays and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be the leading receiver on the team.

However, Morgan, Morris, and Edwards are sure to make a significant impact.
