For the first time since Brady Hoke was fired in 2014, the Wolverines are in search of a new head football coach heading into the 2024-25 season. With a lot at stake right now, and Jim Harbaugh headed back to the NFL ranks, Sherrone Moore seems like a clear-cut choice to be the program’s next head coach; however, Michigan football won’t be making that hire right off the bat.

Michigan football cannot make an immediate hire even though Jim Harbaugh is leaving

Sherrone Moore will be the next head coach of the Michigan football program — it feels as certain as anything in this life. Yet, the Wolverines won’t be making an immediate hire even though Moore is already on staff and Jim Harbaugh is officially heading to the NFL. Why? Well, Michigan state law prevents it.

Per state policy, Warde Manuel and the Michigan Wolverines have to wait a full week (seven days) before making a new hire. Insiders and outsiders alike all know that Sherrone Moore is likely the next man up for the Maize and Blue, yet for the time being, nothing can be done about it.

Sherrone Moore is clearly the next man up for the Wolverines

Last season, with Jim Harbaugh suspended, Sherrone Moore went 4-0 as Michigan’s acting head coach, including impressive victories over No. 10 Penn State in Happy Valley and No. 2 Ohio State at the Big House in Ann Arbor.

Even though Michigan football is losing its first national title-winning head coach since Lloyd Carr, the Wolverines will be in good hands with Moore at the helm.
