With Jim Harbaugh reportedly on his way out, the Michigan football program is about to have a head coaching search for the first time since 2014 when Harbaugh was first hired. That said, unlike the 2014 search, Warde Manuel has a clear-cut choice on his hands: promote offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore and continue the Wolverines’ winning ways.

Warde Manuel has clear choice for next Michigan football coach

Betting odds have pinned a number of top candidates for Michigan football to hire as its next head coach, including LSU coach Brian Kelly, Minnesota coach PJ Fleck, and a number of other highly regarded names. That said, the most likely candidate to replace Jim Harbaugh as Michigan’s head coach remains offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore.

The 2023 season felt like a testing ground for Sherrone Moore, who took over as Michigan’s acting head coach for four of the six games that Jim Harbaugh was suspended for. Of these four games, Moore won all of them, including victories over No. 10 Penn State in Happy Valley and No. 2 Ohio State in Ann Arbor. He also earned the Wolverines their 1,000th victory (at Maryland) and downed Bowling Green in Week 3.

With Jim Harbaugh leaving, Sherrone Moore should get the call

Warde Manuel has a big decision on his hands as it’s not going to be easy replacing Jim Harbaugh, who turned around a dying program and won a few Big Ten titles, a Rose Bowl, a national title, and more throughout his nine-season tenure in Ann Arbor. That said, Sherrone Moore is a player’s coach, a fan favorite, and a proven winner — he has all the traits that make a fantastic head coach, and has proven that he can win massive games and beat Ohio State.

With the offseason already in full swing, we expect Michigan football to move fast, and it’s clear that everyone believes Sherrone Moore will be the next man up.
