Yesterday, for the fourth game in a row, the Michigan football defense proved to be elite, holing the Scarlet Knights to just seven points all game. Heading into next weekend’s Week 5 road matchup against Nebraska, the Wolverines have the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation (still). Additionally, after the win, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano broke down the massive pick-6 from Mike Sainristil, which spurred a second-half blowout from the Maize and Blue.

Michigan football defense picks off Rutgers en route to a 31-7 victory

Michigan football senior defensive captain Mike Sainristil has been stellar so far this year. Yesterday, his impressive play continued as he recorded yet another interception just four games into the season; in fact, this was not just a takeaway, but a defensive score as well.

Greg Schiano breaks it down after the game

“Number zero (Mike Sainristil) jumped it,” Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said of Michigan’s pick-6 after the Scarlet Knights lost on Saturday. “Getting ready for him, you could tell he is a glue guy for them (Michigan football). He’s a good player. You can see he makes a lot of checks. He’s always talking and communicating, and he did a heck of a job. That’s a tough one right there — and then you got to get him on the ground. If they intercept it, you have to get him on the ground. It’s still a 17-7 game. We got to get him on the ground, and we weren’t able to do that. And, I don’t know, some people said there was some — there was a chance to get him, and they got blocked. I don’t know, I didn’t see any of it. But we have to get him on the ground. That’s our job.”

Mike Sainristil and the Wolverines still perfect through four games

Mike Sainristil’s defensive touchdown yesterday helped lead Michigan football to its fourth straight win of the 2023 season, defending the team’s No. 2 ranking in this year’s AP poll. All said and done, Michigan narrowly failed to cover its 24.5-point spread, eventually winning 31-7 during Jim Harbaugh’s first game back from suspension this year.

Next weekend, Michigan football heads to Lincoln for its first road test of the year. Right now, the Wolverines are 18-point favorites to down Nebraska (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) in Week 5.
