Over the past few seasons, the Michigan football offense has forged a clear-cut path to success: run the ball well and drain the clock. Whether a game manager was under center, such as Cade McNamara, or a five-star talent, such as JJ McCarthy, the Wolverines’ offense has largely stuck to its identity en route to three straight Big Ten titles and more. That said, on National Signing Day, Michigan wide receiver commit I’Marion Stewart hinted at some potential changes that may be in the cards for Jim Harbaugh and his offensive system.
Four-star commit I’Marion Stewart hints at potential changes for the Michigan football offense
Today, I’Marion Stewart and other Michigan football commits made their commitments to the Maize and Blue official on National Signing Day, locking themselves into playing college ball for Jim Harbaugh in 2024. To celebrate, Stewart appeared on the Big Ten Network with ex-Michigan star Jake Butt to talk Wolverine football.
During his BTN segment, the four-star Michigan wideout commit predicted changes coming to Sherrone Moore’s offensive scheme, projecting that Michigan football moves more towards the “air raid” style in the years to come.
“I think Michigan, we’re going to start — it’s going to be like an ‘air raid’ offense, it’s looking like,” I’Marion Stewart explained.
Jim Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore will have offensive options going forward
With quarterback Jadyn Davis and other top-ranked offensive weapons on their way into the program, Michigan football may elect to shift offensive focus towards throwing the football around more. That said, Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore have established an identity and a culture that revolves around gritty rushing-style football, and so far, it’s working.
While the Wolverines may start to air the ball out a bit more over the years — as seen throughout the 2023 season, where JJ McCarthy has been given ample opportunity to flash his arm talent — Jim Harbaugh-style football, with an emphasis on the run game, will likely never truly die as long as he is around the program.
