This time two years ago, former Michigan football captain and starting quarterback Cade McNamara had the Maize and Blue sitting at No. 2 overall with an 11-1 record following their 42-27 win over Ohio State, which propelled the Wolverines to their first-ever Big Ten title game. Fast forward to right now, Michigan and JJ McCarthy are coming off of its third straight win over the Buckeyes, sitting at 12-0 heading into this weekend’s Big Ten title game against McNamara’s new team: the Iowa Hawkeyes. In a new interview, the ex-Michigan QB says that he is giving his new team all of the inside info that he can about U-M football and even refers to Michigan as “that other team.”

Cade McNamara was once loved by Michigan football fans, especially since he was the Wolverines’ first quarterback to beat Ohio State and win the Big Ten title since the early 2000s. Still, in 2022, JJ McCarthy was clearly the better quarterback and was given the starting nod after McNamara struggled out of the gate.

After Michigan’s second straight Big Ten title-winning season ended, McNamara hit the transfer portal, heading to Iowa, where he started for a few games before getting injured and being forced to sit out the rest of the year.

Heading into this year’s Big Ten title bout, which pits Michigan football and Iowa against one another for the first time since 2021’s title game when McNamara beat the Hawkeyes 42-3, the former Wolverines starting QB and team captain is feeding his new program all the info they may need to upset the Maize and Blue.

Additionally, there seems to be some tension there, as Cade McNamara refers to Michigan as “the other team” once in his latest interview.

“This week specifically, I am not just getting Deacon (Hill) ready — I am getting the entire team ready as much as I can. Because I know so much about that other team (Michigan football),” Cade McNamara said ahead of the Big Ten title game. “From a defensive standpoint, from an offensive standpoint. I am just doing everything I possibly can from an entire team standpoint to just let (the Iowa Hawkeyes) know everything that I possibly know (about the Wolverines).”

Michigan football hoping to capture third straight Big Ten title

While McNamara was once a Michigan hero for beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten title, and leading the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff back in 2021, all of that goes out the window this weekend when his new team faces off against Jim Harbaugh and Michigan. It’s the circle of college football, and no one can fault McNamara for helping his new school however he can, but it’s one more element that the Maize and Blue must prepare for in order to win the conference for a third straight season.
