On Saturday, even without Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh leading the way, the No. 3 Wolverines marched into Happy Valley and beat Penn State by two scores. A few days later, on Monday afternoon, Harbaugh spoke with the media, where he called Michigan “America’s team” — a quote that had analysts either throwing fits or wholeheartedly siding with the Maize and Blue. One such proponent of Harbaugh and the Wolverines was FOX Sports analyst Colin Cowherd, who was nothing short of obsessed with Michigan yesterday on-air.
Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh calls U-M “America’s team” after Penn State win
Colin Cowherd, perhaps FOX Sports’ most successful sports talk show host, was all about Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football during his show on Monday afternoon. Below is some of what the FOX host had to say about Harbaugh and his Wolverines following an impressive win over a top-10 Penn State team — specifically in response to Harbaugh’s “America’s team” claim.
“I don’t know if he (Jim Harbaugh) is trolling, but that’s the greatest speech in the history of college football,” FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd said of Harbaugh’s “America’s team” speech on Monday. “That was the greatest speech in the history of college football. … Harbaugh’s speech is now THE speech. ‘This should be America’s team’ — (Harbaugh) is right, by the way. That’s how I felt (watching the Michigan-Penn State game). I stood at allegiance.”
More praise for the Wolverines
Cowherd added that he was most impressed with the Wolverines’ strength of self — Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore knows who his team is, and made sure to play to its strengths in State College, even though that meant projected first-round NFL Draft pick JJ McCarthy had to carry a lighter load.
“I watched (the Penn State game) — I haven’t (ever) felt that way about a football team that I have no connection to. (Michigan football) said, ‘We’re not gonna pass the ball. We’re gonna win on our terms, in your place, we’re not even gonna throw the ball. We’re Michigan.’ And by the way, they (Michigan) have a first-round quarterback (JJ McCarthy). ‘We’re not even gonna allow him to throw.’ What a great win for America.”
Cowherd goes in complete opposite direction of pundits at ESPN
While some of Cowherd’s counterparts at ESPN were seemingly personally offended by what Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore said after Michigan football beat Penn State, it was pretty clear that Cowherd was all about it.
