The new landscape of college football is changing rapidly, and when it comes to recently introduced topics like NIL money, the transfer portal, and more, it is essential for the nation’s top programs to keep up with the times. It is clear that the Michigan Wolverines have been doing exactly that thus far; in fact, earlier this week, it was announced that Michigan is one of seven founding members of the nation’s first-ever NIL collective association, which will square off against the NCAA in hopes of blocking further NIL restrictions and national reform.
Michigan Wolverines on the front lines of NIL reform and more
The NCAA is currently on Capitol Hill in hopes of overhauling existing NIL legislation — something that many states and member schools are openly against. This week, in response to recent pushes from the NCAA, the Michigan Wolverines joined ‘The Collective Association’ as a founding member. Alongside six other schools — including Penn State, USC, Florida State, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee — the university has once again found itself as a pioneer in the world of college athletics.
Despite the NCAA’s recent pleas to Congress in hopes of regaining control over the world of college football and more, it appears that the member schools are currently winning the fight over NIL legislation. For the Michigan Wolverines, who have become one of the top NIL pioneers over recent years, keeping the NCAA’s hands off of NIL laws is essential.
So far, it has become clear that the NCAA has all but lost its power when it comes to NIL law and reform. This happened over a year ago when NIL legislation was first put into place by Congress. With massive collectives and NIL movements happening in Ann Arbor, including the ‘Champions Circle’ and ‘M-Power,’ Michigan has been successfully changing with the times.
As things get heated in the fight over NIL laws, the Michigan Wolverines have once again emerged as a leader and are firmly on the front lines of this battle, which continues to evolve as the 2023 college football season approaches.
