Michigan football held its annual spring game on Saturday. The Wolverines played four 12-minute quarters with a running clock.

The Michigan football team was divided into the Maize and Blue squads. Alex Orji was on the Blue Squad, while Davis Warren got the start for the Maize Team.

In the first half, Blue took a 7-3 lead into the break. Orji got Michigan football on the board in the spring with a rushing touchdown. The Maize team attempted two first-half field goals and made one.

The second half was about the young guys. DJ Waller came up with an interception. He also notched a fourth-down stop. Yet, Davis Warren helped win the game (17-7) for the Maize thanks to two touchdown passes.

As expected, the Michigan football defense dominated. The quarterbacks struggled at times. But there were some positive moments too. It’s easy to overreact to the spring game and many fans will do that, but here is our instant analysis of Michigan football’s spring game.

Instant analysis of Michigan football spring game

  • Donovan Edwards looks better than ever. I’m excited to see what he will do as the feature back next season.
  • Alex Orji looks like the starter. He got one first-half drive and it went for a touchdown. There is work to do on the arm, but he made good decisions and flashed what he can do with his legs. He also was effective in the two-minute drill.
  • Davis Warren made a case for himself in the second half. He was the best thrower of the football. Both of his touchdowns came against the reserves though.
  • Andrew Gentry looks like a starting tackle. Blake Frazier also stood out to me.
  • T.J. Guy had an impressive day. So did Jimmy Rolder and Ernest Hausmann.
  • The tackling was on point. That was exceptional.
  • Zeke Berry looks like the next Nickel. Ja’Den McBurrows had a nice stop, plus DJ Waller and Jyaire Hill had nice plays in coverage. Waller had a blown coverage too, which led to a big play, but those guys are starting to look the part.
  • The field goal kicking is a concern.
  • Cole Sullivan is a name that’s been mentioned this spring and he showed up during the spring game, making a key TFL in the fourth quarter.
  • Wide receiver depth is another issue, although having a dude like Colston Loveland helps.
  • Fredrick Moore had a day. He might make a case for WR1.
  • Kendrick Bell is going to be a player.
  • Marlin Klein showed why the coaches have been talking about him this spring.
  • The defense won the day as expected but the offense had some moments. When all these guys are on the same side, the offense will score points. It won’t be Iowa. The defense will be elite.
