Michigan football is hoping to have its first-ever Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback in program history this year. JJ McCarthy, a former five-star quarterback, took over as the Wolverines’ starter during Week 2 of the 2022 season. He has been ranked as one of the top 10 quarterbacks in all of college football ahead of the 2023 season by Pro Football Focus.

JJ McCarthy demonstrated his skills as QB1 for Michigan football during his impressive sophomore season last fall. The team achieved a remarkable 13-1 overall record (10-0 Big Ten) with notable victories over Ohio State, a Big Ten title, and a College Football Playoff appearance. As they approach the 2023 season, the Wolverines aim to maintain their position as one of the top programs in college football.

This year’s roster appears to be the strongest under Jim Harbaugh, featuring one of the most talented quarterbacks to don the Maize and Blue: JJ McCarthy. The former five-star QB commitment for the Wolverines showcased his potential and skill throughout 2021 and 2022, positioning himself as a future standout player at Michigan.

However, as a rising junior quarterback, McCarthy is yet to establish himself among the program’s best, a goal he undoubtedly hopes to achieve this fall. After an impressive first season as a starter for Michigan, throwing 22 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, JJ McCarthy seems poised for an even better junior season, further solidifying his status as a top NFL Draft prospect.

Reports from spring ball indicate that JJ McCarthy is rapidly improving and ready for a stellar season as the leader of the Michigan football offense. If the Wolverines are to contend for a national title for the first time in nearly 30 years, McCarthy and the offense will play a crucial role; ahead of this essential season, PFF has ranked McCarthy as the No. 10 quarterback in all of college football.
