With the 2024 offseason officially upon us, Michigan football is facing some highs and lows. On one hand, the Maize and Blue just won the National Championship for the first time since 1997; however, the team is losing quite a few key pieces — perhaps even Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Recently, FOX analyst Joel Klatt ranked his top 10 (way too early) teams heading into the 2024 season.

Where does Joel Klatt rank Michigan football heading into 2024 season?

The past three seasons have treated Michigan football quite well — three Big Ten titles, three CFP berths, three wins over Ohio State, and a National Championship victory. That said, with a new quarterback at the helm, the loss of Blake Corum (and many other top players), and Jim Harbaugh potentially heading back to the NFL, things are less certain for the Maize and Blue right now.

According to Joel Klatt, Michigan is the No. 7 team in his way-too-early top 10 rankings heading into a vital offseason for the Wolverines. Of course, Klatt would likely feel much better about U-M football if Jim Harbaugh was committed to staying, though that does not appear to be an option right now. Michigan is behind Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss in Klatt’s rankings.

If Harbaugh does decide to leave, offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will likely get the call to be the next head coach, though that is looking too far ahead. For now, Michigan football must throw everything at getting Jim Harbaugh to stick around in hopes of winning a second straight national title; until then, they are still considered a top 10 team, though remain outside of the top 5.
