Over the offseason, numerous new reports of injuries, surgeries, and more have emerged from Ann Arbor. With the season a mere two weeks away, many fans will be pleased to hear the latest Michigan football injury updates from fall camp, which largely bode well for the Maize and Blue. From established standouts like Junior Colson, Will Johnson, Blake Corum, and Donovan Edwards to rising stars such as Amorion Walker and Cole Cabana, it appears that the 2023 roster will be in good shape by the time the fall opener arrives on September 2nd against East Carolina.
Notable Michigan football injury updates
Here are a few of the top players on the Wolvernies’ 2023 roster that have been battling injuries since the 2022 season came to a close:
- Blake Corum (senior, running back)
- Donovan Edwards (junior, running back)
- Junior Colson (junior, linebacker)
- Will Johnson (sophomore, cornerback)
- Amorion Walker (sophomore, cornerback)
- Cole Cabana (freshman, running back)
Of these six Michigan football standouts, it appears that five of them will be ready/are ready for game day on September 2nd. The sixth, Cole Cabana, is still up in the air.
Blake Corum
Perhaps no injury issues were more notable this offseason than those of star running back Blake Corum, who stood out as a junior last fall. Corum underwent offseason surgery and has been diligently preparing for the 2023 season. According to Corum himself, he is feeling amazing and is fully prepared to play in Week 1.
Donovan Edwards
Unlike Blake Corum’s injury concerns, Donovan Edwards’ were less known until after the season came to an end. Since then, his hand has healed, and he underwent surgery for his lower body issue — both injuries that he says are no longer problems for the upcoming season. Like Corum, it’s anticipated that Edwards will be back at 100% for Week 1.
Junior Colson
By the end of the 2022 season, then-sophomore linebacker Junior Colson was dealing with some injury issues of his own. However, the Wolverines’ star LB is now feeling well again this fall, according to his recent injury update earlier this week. Colson is expected to return to his usual self by the beginning of the 2023 season.
Will Johnson
Another standout Michigan football player who underwent offseason surgery is cornerback Will Johnson. The specifics of his current status are less clear at the moment (though they will likely become evident by the end of fall camp); however, Johnson has mentioned that his primary focus this offseason has been on his recovery. Additionally, Jesse Minter has expressed his anticipation that Johnson will be prepared to play in the East Carolina game.
Amorion Walker
Amorion Walker, a towering converted cornerback who previously played as a wide receiver for Michigan football, was recently confirmed to have sustained some level of an undisclosed injury during fall camp — Jim Harbaugh mentioned this earlier in the week. Despite this, Harbaugh is optimistic that Walker will recover within a week or so, making him available for Michigan’s home opener next month.
Cole Cabana
Freshman running back Cole Cabana, the top recruit in the Wolverines’ 2023 signing class, has been sidelined due to a leg injury since arriving in Ann Arbor. There are limited details or updates available for Cabana’s condition at this time, however, the hope in Ann Arbor is that he will recover sufficiently to participate in some late-season action for the Wolverines during the 2023 season. Even if Cabana ends up missing his true freshman year, he has the option to redshirt and return even stronger next year; after all, Michigan football is not lacking in running back depth at the moment.
