Paul Finebaum has been a vocal Michigan football hater for years now; in fact, few (if any) media personalities have been as harsh on Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines since he was hired back in 2015. That said, after Michigan rolled Michigan State 49-0 in East Lansing yesterday, Finebaum’s stance on the Maize and Blue has seemingly changed. While he once had Michigan outside of the College Football Playoff race, he thinks there is a chance that the Wolverines are the No. 1 team in the game right now.

Paul Finebaum is one of the most well-known members of the college football media, and he has been for quite some time. That said, he has been a major Michigan football hater for a while now — a trend that will likely continue until he retires.

Still, Finebaum sided with Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines during both of the NCAA’s seemingly far-fetched investigations and today, publicly stated on The Matt Barrie Show that Michigan football may, in fact, be the best team in college football right now.

“Yeah, you certainly can make an argument (for Michigan to be No. 1),” Finebaum said. “I’m kind of stuck on Georgia because I don’t think they really did anything to lose that, and I think — we’ll get into the whole committee thing here in about two weeks. … But I think it’s a fair argument. I mean, whether you like (the Wolverines) or not — I don’t know many people who do, and there are fewer by the day — they (Michigan football) are the most impressive team in the country this year.

“And you have to start thinking with the metrics of this committee — unless they use sign stealing as a deterrent — they very well may make Michigan No. 1,” he continued. Finebaum added that the initial College Football Playoff ranking doesn’t matter, considering it was Tennessee last year and Mississippi State once in the past.

Again, this is coming from Finebaum, who just recently had Michigan football on the outside of his top-4.

Paul Finebaum still hates the Wolverines, but the Michigan State win forced him to praise Michigan

So, while Finebaum continues to throw some shade at Michigan football and Jim Harbaugh, even he has to admit that the Maize and Blue could be the country’s best team heading into Week 9. Soon enough, we will get to see Michigan go up against two of the top teams in college football: Penn State and Ohio State (Weeks 11 and 13). In those two games, we will get to see how legit the Wolverines truly are this fall.
