Yesterday, JJ McCarthy had yet another incredible performance; this time, helping the Wolverines dismantle the Michigan State Spartans, 49-0. After the game, veteran head coach Jim Harbaugh added to the growing hype surrounding his elite Michigan football quarterback heading into the bye week.

Latest hype for elite Michigan football quarterback following Michigan State win

This weekend, Michigan football gets a well-earned bye week before hosting Purdue to kick off November games at the Big House. Yesterday, however, Michigan took the field for the eighth time this fall, destroying Michigan State 49-0 and improving to 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten) on the year.

Jim Harbaugh is pleased with JJ McCarthy heading into the bye, as would any coach who had a QB of McCarthy’s caliber. Despite being taken out in the third quarter yet again (he is yet to play in the fourth quarter this fall), the Michigan football quarterback still had himself a heck of a game — 21/27 for 289 yards and four touchdowns with no picks.

“(Michigan football has) a real high trust level that JJ (McCarthy) is going to make the play,” Jim Harbaugh said after Michigan crushed the Michigan State Spartans this weekend. “Yeah, they had the perfect defense called. One was a really well-timed blitz that got home. I mean, there must have been seven guys in the backfield. He looked like Oz the Magnificent on that one. Incredible.

“And then he (JJ McCarthy) is just so dangerous when he’s out of the pocket, keeps his eyes downfield, and just picks the open receiver and or runs it himself. It’s a double-edged sword with JJ McCarthy. He is a double-edged sword — he can beat you in so many ways.”

Jim Harbaugh did not stop there, either. Yes — Harbaugh was likely a little extra high on JJ McCarthy, given that Michigan football just picked up a historic win over Michigan State, but he was spot on in his praise of McCarthy and other Wolverines after the game.

“JJ (McCarthy) is just a great player,” Harbaugh added. “I mean, that’s just what it is. The drop-back game was just great. I mean, A++ the way he was throwing the ball. You talk about lasers — that’s what it was.

“… I mean, the catches they were making, the routes they were running, the precision that was there in the drop-back passing game. The contested catches that our tight ends were making — (transfer tight end) AJ Barner especially. There were some real bang-bang shots and coverage was really tight. Only a few inches to spare from where JJ put the throw and then bang, there’s the hit and to hold onto the ball is pretty amazing.”

This week, JJ McCarthy and Michigan football get some rest before a crucial season-ending four-game stretch. In Week 10, Michigan will host Purdue before facing Penn State and Maryland on the road. If the Wolverines can get through these games unphased, the season will again come down to a Week 13 matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Big House in Ann Arbor.
