‘Lots of interest’ in Michigan football RB coach position

There are rumors of a big-time hire by Michigan football as the running backs coach but it’s not surprising that there is a lot of interest.

If you were a running backs coach, there aren’t many jobs that would be more attractive than the opening with the Michigan football program.

Mike Hart won’t be back with the Michigan football team. That was reported this week by multiple outlets. That leaves an opening on the staff of Sherrone Moore. Moore had an idea this was coming as Hart was on “personal leave” before the leave became a permanent change.

Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider reported that a new hire should be “expected” before the start of spring football on March 18th. That would be good news for the Wolverines but Webb also reported that “there is a lot of interest” in coaching the Michigan football running backs.

Rumors of a major hire by Michigan football

Webb also teased a major hire by Sherrone Moore. He’s not the only one and there are rumors of a big-time hire but none of the insiders have dropped the name they are hearing. No one wants to blow up the chances of it actually happening.

DeMarco Murray of Oklahoma is a name that could make sense. Murray and Sherrone Moore were teammates at Oklahoma. Murray also recruited Donovan Edwards when he was in high school and had the Sooners in the mix.

It’s hard to see Murray leaving his alma mater though. Denard Robinson was a popular candidate among Michgan football fans, but he doesn’t have any on-field coaching experience, so it would be a risk, even though he would be dynamic on the recruiting trail.

It feels like something is coming soon and my sincere hope is that there is an announcement this week, because with all of the other changes this offseason, the sooner this hire is made, the better. But it’s not hard to imagine coaches lining up to coach Donovan Edwards and some of the other backs. Plus, the Wolverines love to run the ball as much as anyone, making it a great opportunity for a coach to make a name for himself.
