On New Year’s Day, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy and his Wolverines will face off against their biggest test yet: the Alabama football defense, led by five-star athletes such as Terrion Arnold, a defensive back. With the College Football Playoff approaching quickly, Arnold took some time to praise McCarthy ahead of their matchup, even comparing him to former Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who is regarded as one of the best college QBs of all time due to his elite performance with LSU back in 2019.
Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy earns Joe Burrow comparison
JJ McCarthy and Michigan football are ranked No. 1 nationally right now, a feat the program has not accomplished in quite some time, heading into the College Football Playoff semi-final on January 1. Alabama football, another blue-blood in college football, is coming into the Rose Bowl with a chip on its shoulder and an upset on its mind, and it’s clear that star players like Terrion Arnold are wary about what McCarthy and the Wolverines’ offense can do.
Alabama football five-star praises McCarthy ahead of Rose Bowl
This week, with the Rose Bowl approaching, Arnold praised Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy, even comparing his ability to that of ex-LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.
“Joe Burrow. When you’re playing against somebody, you have to give them the credit that they deserve. And (JJ McCarthy), he’s a very good athlete,” said Alabama football defender Terrion Arnold, a five-star defensive back for the Crimson Tide. “When you look at him on film and things like that, it surprises you how much he actually does run. Like he scrambles, has his eyes down the field. Now obviously, he ain’t no J-Mil (Bama QB Jalen Milroe) or nothing like that, but when it comes time to making the right reads, making the right throws, he’s a great decision-maker and he’s a good athlete.”
College Football Playoff bout should be a fantastic game — both sides are ready
Of course, JJ McCarthy does not have the stats to back up this Joe Burrow comparison, though the film shows another story. Even though he has been injured for a good chunk of the 2023 season, and the fact that Michigan has a run-heavy offense, McCarthy has stood out time and time again, especially in big games like Michigan’s 30-24 win over Ohio State last month.
Alabama football intends to beat the Wolverines in Pasadena; however, it’s become abundantly clear that the Crimson Tide are not taking JJ McCarthy and his Wolverines lightly — not in the slightest.
