Last weekend, Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore, the Wolverines’ second-year offensive coordinator, took over in place of a suspended Jim Harbaugh for the second time this fall. Just as we saw in Week 3, Moore led the No. 3 Wolverines to an impressive win; this time, Michigan downed the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, 24-15. The win was head-turning, even for SEC programs — especially ones like Texas A&M, which just fired Jimbo Fisher and is in need of a new head coach for the 2024 season.
Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore improves to 2-0 with win over Penn State
After Texas A&M fired Jimbo Fisher, a lot of new names started flying around regarding who the Aggies may turn to as their next head coach. TAMU has a ton of NIL support, is in a football-friendly state, has an incredibly passionate fanbase, and more, making the Aggies a top coaching vacancy heading into the 2024 season.
Seeing as there is a major SEC job open, I bet all Michigan football fans can guess who was mentioned as a top replacement candidate: second-year offensive coordinator and long-time Michigan offensive line coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore is 2-0 as a head coach this fall alone and has been a major member of Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff for a few years now. Seeing as he has been a crucial piece for the Wolverines in their turnaround, going from 2-4 in 2020 to winning back-to-back Big Ten titles and more from 2021 through this season, Moore is being pinned as one of the top candidates for just about every major coaching vacancy right now.
Moore pinned as a top potential candidate for SEC opening at Texas A&M
The first national outlet to release a list of potential replacements for Texas A&M was the On3 Network, which has Sherrone Moore listed next to other major names such as Urban Meyer, Dan Lanning, Mike Elko, and more. For the time being, Sherrone Moore will remain the Wolverines’ OC as Michigan chases a national title; in fact, with Jim Harbaugh still suspended (pending a hearing on Friday), there is a chance that Moore has two more games as Michigan’s head coach this fall.
Regardless, when the 2023 season inevitably comes to an end, Moore will be a top name for a number of head coaching jobs — Texas A&M of the SEC included.
