ANN ARBOR, Mich. — This weekend, the No. 3 Wolverines (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) are slated to face a familiar opponent when the defense is on the field: ex-Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis (2019-2021). Since leaving Ann Arbor, Gattis saw a short stint with Miami in the ACC last fall before landing at Maryland as the Terps’ full-time offensive coordinator this season. This weekend, for the first time since Gattis’s exit from Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff, Michigan football star Donovan Edwards and other Wolverines will see Gattis on an opposing Big Ten sideline.

Donovan Edwards first burst onto the scene in a major way for Michigan football against Maryland back in 2021. Like this year’s matchup, it was a late-November road game in College Park, MD, the weekend before Michigan finally beat Ohio State for the first time.

This year’s Michigan-Maryland game will be different for everyone involved, though, especially since Josh Gattis has yet to face his former school (U-M) since leaving Ann Arbor following the 2021 season.

“It’s great — I don’t know if he is on the field or not, but it will be great to see him again. I know it’s gonna be love,” Michigan football star running back Donovan Edwards said on Tuesday. “He (was) a great reason why Michigan was successful, so kudos to him. He has been doing great at Maryland, too, so nothing but respect for Coach Gattis.

“Nothing but respect for Coach Gattis — he’s a great guy,” Donovan Edwards added.

Michigan-Maryland has massive implications for the Wolverines

If Donovan Edwards and Michigan football can get past the 6-4 Maryland Terrapins this weekend — with or without Jim Harbaugh on the sidelines due to the Big Ten’s suspension — the Wolverines will improve to 11-0 heading into next week’s game at the Big House against No. 1 Ohio State.

Additionally, Michigan football may earn its 1,000th all-time win this Saturday, becoming the first program to do so.
