Last Saturday, Michigan football freshman wide receiver Semaj Morgan caught a massive touchdown pass from JJ McCarthy, giving the Maize and Blue a 14-7 lead over the Scarlet Knights. Despite a pass interference call on the defense, Morgan came down with it, marking his first score as a Wolverine just four games into his college career.

On Tuesday, ahead of Michigan’s matchup against Nebraska football, Morgan detailed the play and what it meant to him.

Last Saturday, Semaj Morgan was the highest-graded player (PFF) on the Michigan football offense during the Wolverines’ 31-7 win over Rutgers. During the game, Morgan hauled in a pair of catches, totaling 26 yards and his first touchdown in the Maize and Blue.

Yesterday evening, Semaj Morgan gave us more insight into the touchdown, the play call, and more.

“Yeah, I kind of did know that the ball was gonna come to me,” Semaj Morgan said. “Because all week when we were running over stuff, be like, ‘Man, this is coming to you.’ And he (the defensive back) was pressing me, and it was man (coverage), so I ran the route, JJ (McCarthy) threw a great ball.

“You know, I had to make him look good. I’m just thankful that he trusts me with that. That’s big. That’s real big.”

Morgan taking on a larger role than expected in year one

Semaj Morgan is spot on at the end there — throwing up a 50/50 ball to a true freshman wideout in a Big Ten game is huge. So far, Semaj Morgan has been impressing Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football coaching staff, and as the days go by, it feels like his role may continue to grow.

This weekend, Semaj Morgan and Michigan football hit the road to Lincoln, NE, for a Week 5 bout against Nebraska.
