Yesterday, the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) downed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) in their Big Ten opener at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI. While the offense only had seven drives total yesterday, a new Michigan football freshman — wide receiver Semaj Morgan — saw some solid reps. Following the game, no player graded as high as Morgan did this weekend, per Pro Football Focus.

Michigan football freshman wide receiver earns highest offensive PFF grade

Yesterday, Michigan football freshman wide receiver Semaj Morgan caught two passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. According to the post-game snap count list, Morgan recorded these solid stats on only three plays of game time, making his standout day even more impressive.

Perhaps one of the best offensive plays of the season for Michigan football so far was Morgan’s 18-yard touchdown catch, which was hauled in at a crucial point in the game for the Wolverines. All said and done, Morgan helped lead the Wolverines to a 24-point win, which was spurred by his touchdown catch, a pair of TDs from Blake Corum, and a defensive score from Mike Sainristil.

Semaj Morgan and the Wolverines downed Rutgers, 31-7

According to today’s post-game Pro Football Focus grades, no offensive player was graded higher against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights than this Michigan football freshman pass-catcher. Morgan totaled an 85.6 overall grade, which is notably higher than the next-highest-graded player on offense: Roman Wilson (78.6).

While Semaj Morgan is still just a freshman and may continue to see limited playing time, it’s clear that Jim Harbaugh‘s 2023 class is shaping up to be something special. Yesterday, the Michigan football freshman wide receiver corps totaled 12 snaps between Morgan and fellow freshman Fredrick Moore. If these two continue to turn heads, perhaps their role will start to grow for the Wolverines’ offense throughout Big Ten play.
